Resist/Reuse/Recycle

Picture
Pi members believe in getting the most out of their Apple devices--even when they no longer own them. In short, the landfill is not the answer. We encourage and support the reuse and responsible recycling of electronics.
  • Resist: We advocate resisting the urge (compulsion) to buy the latest and greatest tech unless you have a plan for how to deal with the tech being replaced. A hand-me-down program with family members or friends can be effective in extending, often by years, the useful life of that Mac, iPhone, or iPad. Repurposing some tech for your own use is another good option.
  • Reuse: Beyond the family and friends option, other Pi members might just be looking for the tech you are replacing. Perhaps their needs are not as demanding as yours or maybe they have a plan to insert your lovingly used and still functional item into their hand-me-down structure. Regardless, groups.io is available for members to let others know of tech they have available or tech they are in search of.
  • Recycle: When they can no longer be used, some of our tech devices can be effectively recycled. It takes just a little work to locate a facility that can responsibly recycle our devices and other tech, but it's worth the effort and we all benefit. Apple accepts their products for recycling; Staples and Best Buy also will accept items (including cables and adapters); eAssets Solutions in Falls Church, VA (eassetsolutions.com) and the Mac Recycle Clinic (www.macrecycleclinic.org) in Maryland for those in in the DC area are other good options. These options are provided for information not as recommendations. Check for other companies and organizations close to you, and share them with us.
